Republican Senators “No Longer Cooperating” with Democrats After Trump Guilty Verdict

A group of Republican senators published an open letter to the White House on Friday refusing to cooperate with “any Democrat legislative priorities or nominations” in protest of the Biden administration’s “mockery of the rule of law” following former President Donald Trump’s felony conviction.

As THAIMBC News previously reported, a Manhattan jury found the former president guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to former porn star Stormy Daniels. Trump and his Republican allies have long argued that the prosecution amounted to little more than election interference by the Biden administration via the justice system, while President Biden affirmed the verdict as a victory for the rule of law.

In the aftermath of the historic verdict, many elected Republicans have spoken out to condemn the ruling and express support for the former president. In the Senate, however, a group of six GOP lawmakers have taken their protest a step further, vowing to block Democrat’s budget proposals and political appointees.

As the letter reads:

The White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways. As a Senate Republican conference, we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart.

To that end, we will not 1) allow any increase to non-security related funding for this administration, or any appropriations bill which funds partisan lawfare; 2) vote to confirm this administration’s political and judicial appointees; and 3) allow expedited consideration and passage of Democrat legislation or authorities that are not directly relevant to the safety of the American people.

The letter is cosigned by Senators Mike Lee (R-UT), JD Vance (R-OH), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rick Scott (R-FL), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Eric Schmitt (R-MOI), and Roger Marshall (R-KS). After the letter was published, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Missouri Congressman Josh Hawley signed onto the pledge as well.

“Strongly worded statements are not enough,” Senator Lee wrote alongside the letter on X. “Those who turned our judicial system into a political cudgel must be held accountable. We are no longer cooperating with any Democrat legislative priorities or nominations, and we invite all concerned Senators to join our stand.”
