Biden Says He’ll Exit Presidential Race if He’s Diagnosed with a “Medical Condition”

Update: On Wednesday afternoon, President Biden tested positive for COVID, forcing him to cancel a campaign speech in Nevada. It is unclear how this “medical condition” will affect other scheduled events in the coming weeks.

President Joe Biden said during an interview on Wednesday that he would consider dropping out of the 2024 presidential race if doctors were to diagnose him with a “medical condition” that prevented him from running.

Speaking with Ed Gordon of BET News, the 81-year-old president said that he would only consider ending his reelection campaign “if I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem.”

“I said I was going to be a transitional candidate, and I thought I would be able to move on from this and pass it on to somebody else,” Biden continued. “But I didn’t anticipate things getting so, so, so divided. And quite frankly, I think the only thing age brings is a little bit of wisdom.”

Biden’s interview with BET comes as a growing number of Democrats are calling on him to pass the torch to a younger, more viable candidate.

“President Biden has been one of the most consequential presidents in our nation’s history, and his lifetime of service as a Senator, a Vice President, and now as President has made our country better,” Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), the latest Democrat to turn on the president, told The Los Angeles Times on Wednesday. “But our nation is at a crossroads. A second Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November.”
