Republican Senators Confront Secret Service Director at RNC

A group of furious Republican senators confronted Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, demanding that she answer for the security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Senators John Barrasso of Wyoming and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, who had spoken to Cheatle in a conference call earlier that day, led the group during the interaction and were joined by Senators Kevin Cramer of North Dakota and James Lankford of Oklahoma.

Blackburn shared a video of the confrontation on social media, condemning Cheatle for once again refusing to answer questions.

“Can you give an explanation?” Blackburn demanded. “Why would anyone allow a president to go on stage when you know that you’ve got a potential threat and you’ve got snipers …?”

Cheatle: “I don’t think this is the format to have this discussion.”

Barrasso: “Well, we can find a place to go right now. You answer to us. You answer to us.”

Blackburn: “You owe President Trump answers.”

Barrasso: “You cannot run away from your responsibility to the people of the United States. You’re the head of the Secret Service.”

The two senators released a follow-up statement after questioning Cheatle, saying that “she can run, but she can’t hide from accountability.”
