Douglas Murray Warns of the Dangers of Intense Self-Criticism in Liberal Societies

224

Douglas Murray provides a compelling analysis of the rise of Western anti-Westernism and its far-reaching implications. He observes how liberal societies often hold themselves accountable for global issues, resulting in a double standard where Western societies are judged by their worst aspects.

“Why it is that so many people in our societies, in liberal, free, democratic societies have ended up taking this stance that we are the cause of all evil and wrong in the world, and that nobody else is really responsible for anything, that our societies in America, Britain, Europe, should be judged by our worst aspects and everyone else judged only by their best?”

This rigorous self-criticism can deteriorate into self-loathing and even self-destruction, with Israel frequently targeted in this context. Murray is struck by how some people align with anti-Western groups, despite these groups’ antagonistic views towards Western values.

“There’s a very strange double standard that has emerged and which I’d explain the origins of I’d like to think in the war on the west. How did this come about? It’s very unnatural. Most people want to be proud of the society they’re in let alone if there are lots of reasons to be proud of it as there are in America.”

His objective is to diagnose this troubling trend and alert others to its inevitable consequences, underscoring the importance of balanced self-criticism.
