A luxury yacht carrying 22 people capsized off the coast of Sicily on Monday after being hit by a tornado, leaving one dead and six others, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, unaccounted for. Earlier this year, Lynch, along with business partner Stephen Chamberlain, were found not guilty of committing fraud during the $11 billion sale of their company to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Lynch’s disappearance at sea came less than 48 hours after Chamberlain was struck and killed by a car while out for a run in his neighborhood on Saturday—a coincidence that has raised questions about both incidents.
According to Chamberlain’s attorney:
Our dear client and friend Steve Chamberlain was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running.
He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity. We deeply miss him. Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family.
Two days later, the vessel carrying Lynch and nearly two dozen other passengers was hit by a waterspout while anchored near Porticello, sinking shortly after impact.
Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and Charlotte Golunski, who heroically saved her one-year-old daughter from drowning. Among the missing are Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, and Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, along with their respective family members.
A search-and-rescue operation is ongoing, with the vessel found 48 meters below the sea. Survivors are being treated in local hospitals, while the missing individuals are feared to have been trapped in their cabins during the disaster.
