Are we on the verge of a nuclear conflict? According to a report in The New York Post, it appears the Biden-Harris administration certainly thinks so:
President Biden has signed off on a highly classified plan that shifts America’s nuclear strategy to focus on China as a nuclear threat — and prepare for the possibility that the communist nation could team up with North Korea and Russia against the US, according to a new report.
Biden made the shift in March because the Pentagon believes China’s nuclear arsenal will rival the US and Russia, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
The new strategy is called the “Nuclear Employment Guidance” and also readies the US for a possible coordinated threat between China, Russia, and North Korea, the newspaper reported.
The Chinese government was quick to respond to stories about Biden’s new approach on nuclear weapons. According to Newsweek:
“China is seriously concerned about the relevant report,” said Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during a regular press conference. She added that Beijing maintained its nuclear arsenal at the minimum level required for national security, which was not at the same level as Washington.
The Growing Chinese Threat
According to a new report released earlier this summer, China is in the midst of significantly expanding and modernizing its nuclear arsenal:
According to an annual arms report published on June 17 by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), between January 2023 and January 2024, China increased its nuclear stockpile to 500 warheads from 410.
“China is expanding its nuclear arsenal faster than any other country,” said Hans M. Kristensen, associate senior fellow with SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Program and director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, in a statement. “But in nearly all of the nuclear-armed states, there are either plans or a significant push to increase nuclear forces.”

The growing Chinese nuclear stockpile coupled with global instability – especially in Ukraine and the Middle East – is a troubling development:
“While the global total of nuclear warheads continues to fall as Cold War-era weapons are gradually dismantled, regrettably we continue to see year-on-year increases in the number of operational nuclear warheads,” SIPRI Director Dan Smith said. “This trend seems likely to continue and probably accelerate in the coming years and is extremely concerning.”
The report also said that the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict and the Israel-Hamas war weakened nuclear diplomacy in 2023, noting that Russia suspended the last nuclear arms control treaty with the United States in January 2023.
“We are now in one of the most dangerous periods in human history,” Mr. Smith said. “There are numerous sources of instability—political rivalries, economic inequalities, ecological disruption, an accelerating arms race. The abyss is beckoning and it is time for the great powers to step back and reflect. Preferably together.”
