The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the missile assault was a response to the recent Israeli killings of militant leaders and aggression against the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as in Gaza, as per Reuters.
After Iran bombarded around 200 missiles into Israel on Tuesday evening, escalating tensions in the Middle East region, Israeli military may target Iran’s oil production facilities, according to a report. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of consequences after Iran launched ballistic missiles targeting two military bases of Israel and the headquarters of Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service.
The Israeli military will launch a “significant retaliation” to Iran’s missile attack, within a few days. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the missile assault was a response to the recent Israeli killings of Hezbollah leaders and aggression against the Iran-backed armed group in Lebanon, as well as in Gaza, as per Reuters.
Israel may target Iran’s oil production facilities, reported Axios citing unnamed Israeli officials. The report claimed that Israel may attack Iran’s defence sytem, adding that targeted killings of senior figures is also possible. Oil prices climbed about 3% on Tuesday after Iran fired a salvo of ballistic missiles at Israel.
Recently, Israel carried out targeted strikes at Iran-backed Hezbollah’s underground headquarters in Lebanon’s Beirut, in which the group’s chief Hassan Nasrallah was killed. Earlier in July, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was also killed in Tehran. Iran had vowed retaliation in both instances.
US-Israel Mulling Joint Response
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Iran’s missile attack on his country as a “big mistake” and said Tehran would pay for it. “Iran made a big mistake today and will pay for it. The Iranian regime does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and our determination to take revenge on our enemies,” he said.
Meanwhile, US Vice President Kamala Harris labeled Iran as a “dangerous” and “destabilizing” force in the Middle East, reiteraing US’ commitment to Israel’s security. “I’m clear-eyed that Iran is a destabilising, dangerous force in the Middle East,” Harris said during a press briefing.
“I will always ensure that Israel has the ability to defend itself against Iran and Iran-backed terrorist militias.” Harris voiced her full support for President Joe Biden’s directive authorizing the US military to assist in countering the missile threat. “Initial indications are that Israel, with our assistance, was able to defeat this attack,” she added, reiterating Washington’s resolve to safeguard its allies in the region.
