Vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz reportedly had a fling with the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party official’s daughter while he was in China, according to a new report.
The Daily Mail reported that when Walz took a trip to China in 1989 to teach, he had a fling with the daughter of a high-ranking Communist official at the time. Jenna Wang, 59, has made the claim that Walz gave her gifts, and seduced her at his temporary accommodations.
The two allegedly could not risk holding hands in public together or show any affection as Wang’s father was a high-ranking official in the Chinese Communist Party at the time and would have disowned her.
The outlet reported that the relationship grew behind closed doors as they shared time together, which led the then-24-year-old to think about long-term plans of marriage, but it could not happen at the time. Wang claimed that the shame of being treated “like a prostitute*” led her to have thoughts of suicide and growing anger.
“Tim was very passionate and very romantic. I can still remember dancing with him to our favorite song, Careless Whisper,” she told the outlet. “The fact we couldn’t touch or kiss in public just made it all the more exciting and intense when we were finally alone. We were deeply in love and I wanted to marry him and start a family. When it didn’t happen, I felt very unhappy and sad. Tim’s behavior was very selfish.”
Kamala Harris’ choice for VP has already drawn criticism, however, the alleged relationship with Wang adds even more to the controversy surrounding Walz’ activities in China. Walz has previously claimed in a congressional hearing that he was in Hong Kong when the Tiananmen Square Massacre occurred, however further investigation revealed that he arrived in the country after the events had taken place.
Wang said that she had been attending a lecture of his to study up on her English when the then-25-year-old Walz whispered in her ear: “You are very beautiful.”
“Tim was very handsome. I loved his eyes and his big mouth. We talked afterwards and he was very complimentary about my English,” Wang said of the interaction with Walz. “My colleagues couldn’t speak whole sentences but Tim told me that if he closed his eyes and listened it was like being back in America.”
“But we talked for hours and hours, we stayed in bed, we had sex. He continued to buy me gifts,” Wang said. “I could never stay overnight because of the social conventions. It was very repressive. Couples walked around the city like robots. My father would have been very, very angry and sad if he had found out.”
Soon, however, the relationship between Walz and Wang hit some rough patches, per the report. Walz had to go back to the US, but wrote letter to Wang, and spoke about his life in America, per the Daily Mail. Wang had hopes of receiving a passport and gathered information for Walz to get one. When Walz came back to Chine in 1992, the relationship began to take a turn.
Walz began to make some clumsy romantic gestures in public, leading to her being turned off by the then-younger Walz. When Wang confronted Walz about their future plans, he reportedly suggested that Wang was more interested in a passport than him.
After separating from him during a trip, Wang she went back to life how it was before. She told the outlet, “I never saw Tim again.” The two later shared some messages over Facebook in 2009 and talked about how life turned out for them, per the outlet.
Wang is now a mother of one, and told the outlet that she is coming forward now only because she thinks that he behaved selfishly towards her, “This is a very crucial moment in history and a man like this does not appear to have the character and integrity to do one of the most important jobs in the world.”
